Information for parents about Years 9 and 10 in 2023

7th July 2022

Dear Parents,

This is the time of year when you will be looking at high school options for your child in 2023 as schools open for Year 9 applications. We are excited about what we can offer our Year 9 and 10 students in 2023 , and this letter aims to address any questions you may have.

Why choose Year 9-10 at the Hare Krishna School?

The Hare Krishna School is the only school in New Zealand to provide a Krishna conscious education, which includes a structured sastra learning programme and meaningful experiences in devotional service. In our supportive Krishna conscious environment, the Year 9-10 students will be provided with a strong academic foundation to prepare them for success at Year 11 and beyond. A smaller class size, with dedicated and experienced high school teachers, means students will receive more individual instruction and attention.

What will the class structure and academic programme look like?

There will be a Year 9-10 class, distinct from the Year 7-8 class. The Year 9-10 class will be based in the new classroom. The homeroom teacher will oversee the students’ academic and pastoral needs. The table below shows the subjects we will offer across the New Zealand Curriculum; the homeroom teacher will teach in 2-3 of these subject areas and specialist teachers will cover other subjects.

How will students be prepared for Year 11?

Our Year 9 and 10 courses will be designed according to the NZ national curriculum and will include integrated as well as separate sastra instruction. We place high expectations on our Year 9 – 10 students to participate in their academic programme with full effort. Strong emphasis will be placed on developing all the key competences of the NZ curriculum such as managing self, participating and contributing, relating to others, thinking and using language, symbols and text. Leadership opportunities will also be offered. These competencies are vital for further success in Year 11 and beyond.

Teachers will use the same range of appropriate resources and methods of assessment as those used in other NZ secondary schools at Years 9 and 10. Parents can be confident that students will be well prepared for Year 11 by studying at the Hare Krishna School in Years 9 and 10.

What about beyond Year 10?

Year 10 graduates at Hare Krishna School will be prepared to join other high schools in or out of their zone at Year 11, when they will study for Level 1 NCEA qualifications in both core and option subject areas. It is worth noting that at most high schools  there are no prerequisites for subject options at Year 11, except for the study of languages. To gain NCEA Level 1, students are required to gain 80 credits including 10 in literacy and 10 in numeracy. Credits can come from a combination of Level 1, 2 or 3 achievement standards.
